EMOTIONAL MARK MAKING

 ASSIGNMENT 3

Jonathan Hiew - 0333787

In assignment 3, it requires me to look into creating a set of triptych visuals which explore “line and dot-based markings” into a set of triptych 3 x A3 creative piece of illustration. This illustration is to be inspired by the stories I have kept or collected from my collection of literary material – song lyric, poetry, short story, media news, documentary article and etc. I had to identify the “mood” of the story chosen and express that using the visual elements and principles of lines and dots. My artowork is limited to only the use of black and white, as well as in-between grey tones.

This assignment had to be done with 3 kinds of submissions as below:

  1. Exploration of Formal qualities of lines and dots (Mark making black and white exploration) (All over the A3 cartridge papers x 2 pieces)

  2. Exploration of Composition and layout with combined mark makings derived from the step one.

  3. Final art work – Triptych (A3 x 3 pages) illustrating your emotion based on your chosen literary source.

About My Artwork

I based this on a song called Incubus - Drive. The song is about how Fear controls you and how the singer tells you to control it by taking the wheel and steer. The song relates to me because I constantly am afraid to do things, thus the lack of confidence. The left part of the triptych shows the person's mind being controlled by fear and so his surroundings become very distorted. The middle part of the triptych shows what goes on in a this person's head. A scenario plays our where he is running away from fear, towards a cliff. The bottom left scenario shows that he is too fearful to jump off the cliff and therefore gives in to fear. The bottom right scenario, however, took the leap of faith and turned that fear into bravery. The right part of the triptych shows him having a sense of clarity that if he doesn't let fear control him, good things can happen from being brave.
