Seven Deadly Sins

Jonathan Hiew - 0333787

 ASSIGNMENT 4

Assignment 4 brings me to look into creating a set of 7 images in an A5 booklet, communicating the given theme "Seven Deadly Sins". These sins form the Christianity foundational belief which reflect the essence of human behavious. All seven of these emotions are rebellious tendencies which afflict human nature. The list of sins are as follows: -

  1. Gluttony

  2. Envy

  3. Lust

  4. Wrath

  5. Greed

  6. Sloth

  7. Pride

By embarking on visualizing these seven deadly sins in a modern day context, I, as an artist/designer are required to interpret these sins into formalized series of A5 word and image illustrations that could be kept as a pocket booklet targeting busy city dwellers. The colour usage would be limited to two colour maximum (excluding black and white). The image has to be original and function that it is strikingly beautiful in small scale of A5. There must be a border that delineate each image but could be seen as a set.

There are 3 submissions in this assignment as well, which are: -

  1. Exploration of materials and resources relating to the given theme. A minimum of 2 "Sketch note-based" Mindmapping process. Relevant collection of images and reading materials.

  2. Exploration of Word and Image layouts; that includes layering with combined mark makings process.

  3. Final artwork - 8 pages A5 Booklet (A5 x 7 images with 0.5 cm white borders, with one page dedicated to my personalized written texts interpretation of these sins)

About My Artwork

All of these sins were referenced from my own face, except for Wrath and Lust. I tried to match the colour codes according to each sin based on internet references of how people perceive these 7 deadly sins in different colours (e.g. Wrath - Red, Greed/Avarice - Yellow) but what mattered most to me is the emotion and position of the faces. I tackled on how would people look like when each sin has taken control over them. I feel that this assignment helped me to understand more about how human can get overwhelmed with emotions, and without self-constrain the emotions could turn into a deadly sin.
