"STOP THINKING LIKE A CONSUMER, START THINKING LIKE A DESIGNER."

ASSIGNMENT 2

STORYBOARDING

a2.png

Our second assignment is linked from our first assignment, where the problem that stems out from the first assignment will get an answer/solution to it from the second assignment. About this assignment:

Task and considerations:

A. Communicate your findings through:

  • 1. Enact (reenactment) – to simulate part, semblance or replicating the meaning you have discovered from the story.

  • 2. Illustrate (visual recreation) – to create a conceptual or abstract interpretation of the findings or meaning of the story using 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional mediums and animating them using techniques like, stop-motion, time-lapse or using photographic/video special effects (such as green screen, costume design & make-up)

  • 3. Construct (3 dimensional or spatial recreation) – to focus on events which would be heavily influenced by the design of space, environment or settings

B. Storyboard

1. To fulfill part A above, you need to create a storyboard.

  • a. A storyboard is a stage by stage, graphic/illustrative representation how how your video will unfold. There are many ways to do one and there aren’t no fixed format. But a typical storyboard will have a visual frame and some notes about what is happening in the video and may contain secondary symbols or notes about the type of shot, angles and etc.

  • b. Storyboards are essential especially among designers to determine the semiotics of the visuals. (How the visuals will communicate with the audience or how the designer would want the visuals to behave for the audience or how the visuals would inform, evoke, provoke or entertain the audience)

Requirement:

1. Each team must produce 2 storyboards which signifies two possible design or visual directions.

2. Each storyboard must be fully illustrated. Type of medium for illustration or style can be decided by the team or discussed with the facilitator or lecturer.

3. Each storyboard must have a title and team members and illustrated on A3 sheets using cartridge paper, butter paper or relevant.

4. Upload the sheets to your CTX e-journal (e-portfolio site) and use this to present your ideas at deadline.

To start off our storybaording process, we drew the storyboards in a form of stickmen and white background, just to focus on the main events that happen with the characters. We followed them up with some narrations and we drew them event by event.

We planned out how we would lay out the storyboard, which was in the form of roughly A6 in size. We also cut them up to pieces of A6 papers instead of just drawing 4 A6s in 1 A4 paper, so that we can add any frames in between (if ever need be, which we did). We find it more convenient this way so that the flow of the story continues smoothly.

After that, we divided our tasks by giving a role to what each of us would do in drawing and finalizing the storyboard. We go by this order:

  1. Carla: Buildings & Objects

  2. Daryl: Character's body & the positions

  3. Jonathan: Character's eyes, facial expressions, clothing & narrations

  4. Jim: Shading

For the script and the events that would play out in the story, we worked on them together.

The no. of slides were a lot, as we took pictures of the storyboard frame by frame (total no. of slides: 79). You can download and view our slides at the bottom of this page.

Our storyboard is based off the concept of games that require the player to make life-changing decisions in the game. Such games are: Life Is Strange, DETROIT: Become Human and The Walking Dead (or the ever popular mobile game Choices).

All in all, the idea behind story-boarding is that you need to first have your ideas, which you then draw them out on a piece of paper as a rough idea. From there, you can build up the storyboard further and once you've finalized your story, you can draw them out in a better fashion. Mr. Charles was fascinated by our presentation. He liked how that the viewers are able to interact with the video and manipulate the story-line by making hard decisions. We hope that our execution on the video would come out great!
