UNCONVENTIONAL SELF PORTRAIT
ASSIGNMENT 1
Jonathan Hiew - 0333787
For my first assignment, I was given a task to express an unconventional self portrait by using an A3, >200gsm watercolour paper. The medium that I was told to use was pigment ink pen in that ranges between 0.1 - 0.6 thickness. I could mix and blend different mediums as well, but I chose to stick with the pen. I could not use pencil, however. After researching on the techniques and methods of drawing, I get to understand better on producing various types of visual expressions.
I also needed to complete a minimum of 7 sketches of human faces at different angles. I had my friends pose for me and took picture of them as reference. I first drew boxes to separate from each other and draw 2 faces in pencil with the rest in pigment ink pen. The faces could be looking downwards, drawn close-up or drawn inverted. Overall, this assignment was my first step of learning to become a better artist.
I did a lot of trying-out sketches. You can see my progress below from how unappealing it was at first until it became rather satisfactory.

About My Drawing
I tackled on the topic of confidence because I can relate to it whenever I would want to do something - be it drawing, performing or talking. It's something that I needed to work on. So, I decided that I wanted to express that lack of confidence onto my art. I wanted to show through my drawing that I should have more confidence in what I do as well as for the people to see that they should feel more confident about themselves. Ironically, although my art tackles on me being more confident, I was really not confident on showing this during submission because after all, it was my first assignment. In the end, it proved to be more than satisfactory.
