ART MOVEMENT STUDY

 ASSIGNMENT 2

Jonathan Hiew - 0333787

As for assignment 2, I studied art history as a source of generating ideas for my practical work. Ranging from Dadaism, De Stijl, Surrealism, Cubism, and many more, I get to observe their concepts of art and apply them in my work. My task was that I implement any one of those art techniques that expresses myself, similar to assignment 1.

I had to produce as many trial sketches as possible and present the final artwork to my lecturer. I decided to go for cubism, and add a distortion to a part of my face. This submission requires 2 parts:

  1. Trial sketches to observe the progression towards my final artwork.

  2. Final artwork.

It was not easy coming up with a definite idea, and to also draw it on paper. I decided to go for cubism because of how interesting the style of the art is and it captures me. I used a mixture of pen, colour pencil and oil pastel to complete this assignment. During the progress, I did lots of research on techniques of using an oil pastel and pen.

This was the picture that I took for reference. I printed it out in black & white A4 paper to draw my face out on an A3 watercolour paper. I first sketched my face using pencil and laying out the parts of my artwork with different colours. I also YouTubed and Googled for a lot of tutorials to learn from (considering the fact that I have no knowledge in colouring). I didn't know complimentary colours, pressure, control, and blending. I took my chance with this, and the outcome is just average. There wasn't much meaning behind the picture, just that perhaps I wanted to show my face in a fragmented form because piece by piece I'm losing my identity.

Final

I redid this assignment at a later date. However, it did not come out better than the first one. It looked simply rushed and it didn't have as much colour. I was quite disappointed at first but then I thought it is another learning experience for me. First two pictures are the trials I made and the 3rd pic is the final for my 2nd attempt at this assignment.
